    So, I've made a decision.

Once this virus plays out here, I'm going to start the process of negotiating a locally-licensed brewing of Corona beer called Wuhan Corona.

The slogans write themselves! The ads will go viral!

    Wuhan Corona: Killer taste!
Wuhan Corona: Catch it while you can!

It is bizarre. It is somewhat scandalous. And it is on my wool coat's lapel right now.

At the office, the only person who noticed was our designer and he started laughing so hard I was concerned for his continued breathing. I suspect he's ordering one.

So fairies on the internet? Or urban fairies? Both? I read a book where a fey based computer game would take the players to the other side. It recreated the whole Tam Lin story. I found it, "Feyland". Kind of like "Ready Player One". I haven't seen any games on this theme.
    ZDL
    Nov 3 '19
Well, now that I've had a night to dream on it, I picture an alternate history where WWII blew apart the separation between the fey lands and the world of humanity and a far larger war broke out: faerie vs. human. At first humans lost at tremendous costs in life, but technology, being more reliable and available to anybody to use instead of only those "Gifted", turned the tide and the war was taken to Fae itself.

Now, a century later, we live in a world where higher-than-current tech and magic interweave. A great number of fae have embraced technology. Humans, naturally, don't trust fae and have made them an underclass, and deep in the thickest bowels of the darkest corners of Fae the greatest of the old-time powers sit and brood and gather their forces to return battle to the humans.

This would give us a few interesting social classes: humanity (in two subclasses: the ruling powers and the underclasses), the subsumed (fae who've embraced technology, interacting primarily with the underclasses since their way into the ruling classes is blocked), the unsubsumed (fae of weak to middling power who refuse to embrace technology) and the Powers (the ancient Fae nobles scheming to get back on top).

I should write this up somewhere.
    hairylarry
    Nov 3 '19
Yes, this is good and has plenty of room for more elaboration.
    hairylarry
    Nov 3 '19
I am actually fascinated by this idea. I keep running through my head about how to incorporate the Wild Hunt which would be more feypunk than cyber fey.
    ZDL
    Nov 3 '19
Well, if a tipsy brain outpouring generates interest like this, maybe it's worth writing up!
    ZDL
    Nov 4 '19
I've started writing up the background story and am researching where in history this could come down (I'm aiming for very late in WWII). I'm also picturing the Fae outbreak picking up the flavours of where they break out, so the first batch breaking out in Nazi Germany adopted all the Nazi symbolism and paraphernalia, because part of my dream that expanded from a stupid name for a genre involved a being with alien beauty and grace doing a Hitleresque speech to a horde of humans and things, along the lines of "Power of the Will" and such.
    RobboG
    Nov 4 '19
I am fascinated by the Wild Hunt. In a Western setting I am writing for I introduce the Riders in the Sky -spirits that stay out of Hell by getting bad men to change their ways.
    hairylarry
    Nov 4 '19
So maybe Blitzkrieg is Wild Hunt.
    hairylarry

How about a near future where the sleeping fey awake and reveal that they, via proxy, are the actual 1% that own most of the worlds wealth. Now that they are awake they begin flexing their influence and wealth, dividing up the world despite governmental interventions.

Effectively, you get a cyberpunk style world with incorporated fey courts instead of Megacorporations controlling everything. Those working for the fey are bound by more than contracts, thus making "free" mercenaries much more rare and interesting as PC potential. Perhaps the PC are all fey blooded humans. Just human enough to be "free" but still magically empowered by fey ancestry.
    hairylarry
    Nov 5 '19
ZDL - Probably much better than anything I could suggest. Keep me informed.
    ZDL
    Nov 5 '19
@Reidzilla: I'm shooting for the fey being the underclass, though, because usually games have the fey (or their stand-ins like elves) be some kind of revered or feared overclass.

And because I want the image of a brownie (or equivalent) in cybergear. :D
    ZDL
    Nov 6 '19
@hairylarry: So, I was originally going to put the court of the Yellow Emperor in this part of the world, but then decided it would be here … just in time for the Mongol answer to the fey to take them out of the picture and send them packing. :D
    hairylarry
    Nov 6 '19
Wow, keep with it. This is interesting stuff.
    ZDL
    Nov 7 '19
The heavenly court being sent packing by the Mongol powers has led me down a path where some of the fey powers actually allied with humanity against their fellows. This makes for an even more convoluted set of factions.
    hairylarry
    Nov 8 '19
I feel that especially in the underclasses having mixed parties sharing common goals would be cool.
    ZDL
    Nov 8 '19
That is part of the invent. I'm also looking at similar strained alliance potential in the upper crust like the Mongol spirit-displaced Xianren having worked with the human world because of their hatred for the Mongol horde that hit them from behind while they were eradicating the Kami.
    ZDL

I think games are a fantastic way to educate. My kids learned from actively participating in games that broadened their understanding of history, geography, math, science and many other subjects. Playing games brought what they learned from books into focus.

I bought the Ready Ref Sheets for D&D from Judges Guild despite 10 not having a group currently 2) not playing D&D in years. It was very interesting being a huge assortment of random charts for encounters especially I towns and cities.

Holy cow! When the tables got to female characters they were kind of objectifying. they added mechanics to rollup an additional three stats if you follow? Charisma was the dump stat as it dumped more sand int the hourglass figure?

Very 70's, very male oriented. I can see a lot of people criticizing this and then turning around and rolling up the looks of female characters in secret. Hopefully I treat women in my games a little better (everyone establishes their looks. Stats only slightly affect this).:D

In most games I am in there are girls playing. Usually my wife, my daughters, my granddaughters, my daughters in law. So you know how I feel about objectification. Male player, female player. Male character, female character. Makes no difference to me. If they're dwarves you usually can't tell. And it's impolite to ask.
    RobboG
    Oct 13 '19
I personally think the female dwarves wear fake beards when traveling to avoid undue attention but clean up pretty well, which led humans to believe they were bearded like the males.
    hairylarry
    Oct 13 '19
I'm of the school where all dwarves have beards and humans can't tell male from female but the dwarves think they know but they aren't always right which leads to some awkward honeymoons.
    RobboG
    Oct 13 '19
Yi-i-i-i-i-kes. For good measure say that dwarves can't tell elf males from females without practice. :D

Even the Dalai Lama agrees that women are only worth their looks, so it's obvious that charts like that are needed.

So, I bragged about this elsewhere (MeWe) but this is probably a better-focused place for it. Meet my dice tower/dice storage tray of doom. (Not depicted is the extra spacer in the tower portion that widens the slot sufficiently that I can roll d24s, d30s, and some oversized Chinese drinking game dice I have.) It's made almost entirely of bamboo, has a felt underlay for where the dice roll (or get stored), is held together when packed up by magnets (and indeed magnets are what's holding the dice tower in the corner) and packs up into a small, easily-carried box.

I've been hearing Arnesonian a lot: shorthand for ultra minimal rules. We're talking 2d6 and try to roll high. It took me a minute to realize how pervasive this style actually was/is. Car Wars used the approach for Sunday Drivers. Marc W. Miller ran CT using bare minimum decide what to roll. Arneson started RP with it (y6our opinion may vary whether it is an RPG yet or not).

It is not a narrative or story based approach where the players have input about the nature of the world (though close rolls may require a little negotiating). It looks really nice for online gaming. If I did it from the start I probably could have avoided back problems was lugging D&D Second Edition around (my group was heavy into split books). Any comments?

Carl's game, Wizards and Heroes, uses a d20 and 2 d6. (3 to roll stats) It turns out that 2d6 with advantage averages within a few hundredths of a d8 and 2d6 with disadvantage averages within a few hundredths of a d4. The spread is different but the average is the same. So you can approximate d4 and d8 with 2d6. And you can approximate percentile with d20*5. And if you need d10 just double the target and roll d20.
    RobboG
    Sep 19 '19
I like using a pool of d6. You start with 2d6. A bonus gives another die. So does a penalty. Bonuses and penalties cancel out. If you are left with no bonuses or penalties net -roll 2d6. If there are penalties roll that many extra dice and take the lowest two. If there are extra bonuses roll that many extra dice and take the two highest. It's less of a bump than just adding mods to 2d6.

I find it is easier to improvise and evoke atmosphere if you have a certain amount of details worked out. What's over that hill? Well I know there was a necromancer living here forty years ago but vanished, a group of knights set a watch over the area and vanished as well and the centaur worlds are nearby. Centaurs in scavenged armor fighting undead!"

Growing up with parents who were avid readers I learned that books provided an escape to other worlds and gave me and endless supply of new ideas. I read every mystery/fantasy/scifi/adventure novel I could get my hands on. This in turn provided me with ideas on how an RPG should flow when I started to DM in the 90s.

We are setting up actual play podcasts in Tenkar's Tavern. I'm calling it "If You Play You Win". Here's the plan, one offs, pregens, anyone can jump in, rotating DMs, the DM chooses the system and the quest. Are you interested in running a quest on your rules elite system? Sounds like a perfect match.
