The world is not, whatever your English teachers say, not a stage, and Juliet is not the rising sun. She is just a girl Romeo wants to get into bed. But nearly every English teacher I have ever had, at every level, has given me some version of this spiel: We read fiction, we learn literature because good writing illuminates the truth of our world, the truth of ourselves, in a way that the everyday does not and cannot always.

A recently discovered map of Middle-earth annotated by JRR Tolkien reveals The Lord of the Rings author’s observation that Hobbiton is on the same latitude as Oxford, and implies that the Italian city of Ravenna could be the inspiration behind the fictional city of Minas Tirith.

I am in no way affiliated with this company, nor was I asked to promote them.
Based on the novel by Terry Pratchett "Wintersmith" is played by Hairy Larry and George and sung by Pam Cox. Special thanks to all the photographers for uploading their work to http://www.sxc.hu/ and to Eren Pader for the great brokedoll machinima animation. Also thanks to Koni Lanzius for helping with this. The photos tell the story but the animation sets the mood and really makes this video work.

Access this amazing map application in your browser for free. Use the maps you create in your commercial or non-commercial projects.
Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator code is on github and is licensed MIT.
A whiteboard app on the web the DM could use for drawing maps or diagrams for online games. You can also post text and pictures. Players can also post, make map annotations during play, upload something they saw, etc.
This runs in the browser so on any platform. No passwords required and no cost to set up the whiteboard for a game and use it. You can download images of the whiteboard at any time.
You invite people with a link. If they have the link they are there. No password required. The thing I like about this app is that it is easy to use and there is nothing in the way. When you set up the board you get the link. Share the link to invite players to the whiteboard. The board stays up for 21 days for free.
This company does offer premium services like no 21 day timeout and logins with passwords but none of that is necessary for a good night of game play.

Caeora recommended this article so DMs can print large versions of his maps to use on a tabletop.
"Have you ever found yourself in need to print a very large image, but your printer can only use common A4, US Letter or A3 paper sizes? If you want to print a large poster or a large map and you can't go to a specialized shop where they can print it for you at the required dimensions, you can use your home printer to print that image on multiple pages."

I got to play this with Greg Gillespie DM at North Texas RPG Con. The amount of detail is amazing.
So when I saw it on Tenkar's feed I had to give it a link. Notice I left Tenkar's affiliate id intact.

"Ten thousand years ago, in the Neolithic period, before human beings began making pottery, we were playing games on flat stone boards drilled with two or more rows of holes.1 By the Early Dynastic Period in Ancient Egypt, three millennia later, board games were already represented in hieroglyphs. And on the wall of Nefertari’s tomb, built in the twelfth or thirteenth century BCE, someone painted the queen playing Senet, one of three Ancient Egyptian board games whose pieces have come down to us, along with Mehen and Hounds and Jackals."
There is a ton of cool boardgame artwork here. All old enough to be public domain.
If you're into philosophy and literary criticism there's food for thought here.
"For the next little while, we’re going through Ann Swinfen’s In Defence of Fantasy (1), taking it chapter by chapter, as promised. This week, we start with the introductory chapter, “Fantasy and the Marvellous.” I’m going to take this opener somewhat backward, because it’s the best way to introduce some concepts that may or may not be familiar; in fact, they may raise echoes of long forgotten (or in my case, repressed) introductory philosophy classes, or they may be part of your daily life. You’ll recognize that part when we get there. Yay, theory!"

"Curated collections of Free Culture, Creative Commons, and Public Domain art, music, and literature.
Free Culture and Creative Commons licenses allow the reuse of art, music, and literature creating new works from old. So, for example, my song “Chess Man Blues” is licensed Creative Commons Attribution or CC-BY. This means anyone can use “Chess Man Blues” in their project whether it’s a game, a video, or a podcast as long as they provide correct attribution: “Chess Man Blues” by Larry Heyl.
There are many other Free Culture licenses, like the GPL for software, each tailored to a specific need. Not all Creative Commons licenses are Free Culture. The non-commercial and no-derivatives licenses are more restrictive than their Free Culture licenses while still providing for some reuse. Public domain works are completely free. Check the links to the right for more information on Free culture and Creative Commons licenses."
