So, post-62% ABV malfunctioning brain seizure idea: a campaign genre called "cyberfae" or perhaps instead "feypunk".

Stupid idea? Has it been done before?

    Not unless you count Shadowrun.

So fairies on the internet? Or urban fairies? Both? I read a book where a fey based computer game would take the players to the other side. It recreated the whole Tam Lin story. I found it, "Feyland". Kind of like "Ready Player One". I haven't seen any games on this theme.

Well, now that I've had a night to dream on it, I picture an alternate history where WWII blew apart the separation between the fey lands and the world of humanity and a far larger war broke out: faerie vs. human. At first humans lost at tremendous costs in life, but technology, being more reliable and available to anybody to use instead of only those "Gifted", turned the tide and the war was taken to Fae itself.

Now, a century later, we live in a world where higher-than-current tech and magic interweave. A great number of fae have embraced technology. Humans, naturally, don't trust fae and have made them an underclass, and deep in the thickest bowels of the darkest corners of Fae the greatest of the old-time powers sit and brood and gather their forces to return battle to the humans.

This would give us a few interesting social classes: humanity (in two subclasses: the ruling powers and the underclasses), the subsumed (fae who've embraced technology, interacting primarily with the underclasses since their way into the ruling classes is blocked), the unsubsumed (fae of weak to middling power who refuse to embrace technology) and the Powers (the ancient Fae nobles scheming to get back on top).

I should write this up somewhere.

Yes, this is good and has plenty of room for more elaboration.

I am actually fascinated by this idea. I keep running through my head about how to incorporate the Wild Hunt which would be more feypunk than cyber fey.

Well, if a tipsy brain outpouring generates interest like this, maybe it's worth writing up!

I've started writing up the background story and am researching where in history this could come down (I'm aiming for very late in WWII). I'm also picturing the Fae outbreak picking up the flavours of where they break out, so the first batch breaking out in Nazi Germany adopted all the Nazi symbolism and paraphernalia, because part of my dream that expanded from a stupid name for a genre involved a being with alien beauty and grace doing a Hitleresque speech to a horde of humans and things, along the lines of "Power of the Will" and such.

I am fascinated by the Wild Hunt. In a Western setting I am writing for I introduce the Riders in the Sky -spirits that stay out of Hell by getting bad men to change their ways.

So maybe Blitzkrieg is Wild Hunt.

The Fae outbreak in Japan could be Samurai, a popular role playing archetype.

I am incredibly weary of the geek obsession with pseudo-Japanese tropes. I have something else planned for that region…

How about a near future where the sleeping fey awake and reveal that they, via proxy, are the actual 1% that own most of the worlds wealth. Now that they are awake they begin flexing their influence and wealth, dividing up the world despite governmental interventions.

Effectively, you get a cyberpunk style world with incorporated fey courts instead of Megacorporations controlling everything. Those working for the fey are bound by more than contracts, thus making "free" mercenaries much more rare and interesting as PC potential. Perhaps the PC are all fey blooded humans. Just human enough to be "free" but still magically empowered by fey ancestry.

ZDL - Probably much better than anything I could suggest. Keep me informed.

@Reidzilla: I'm shooting for the fey being the underclass, though, because usually games have the fey (or their stand-ins like elves) be some kind of revered or feared overclass.

And because I want the image of a brownie (or equivalent) in cybergear. :D

@hairylarry: So, I was originally going to put the court of the Yellow Emperor in this part of the world, but then decided it would be here … just in time for the Mongol answer to the fey to take them out of the picture and send them packing. :D

Wow, keep with it. This is interesting stuff.

The heavenly court being sent packing by the Mongol powers has led me down a path where some of the fey powers actually allied with humanity against their fellows. This makes for an even more convoluted set of factions.

I feel that especially in the underclasses having mixed parties sharing common goals would be cool.

That is part of the invent. I'm also looking at similar strained alliance potential in the upper crust like the Mongol spirit-displaced Xianren having worked with the human world because of their hatred for the Mongol horde that hit them from behind while they were eradicating the Kami.

Intent, not invent. Autocorrect strikes again.

    Invent is also appropriate.
